the window to the world on life of a poet: Tim Schaefer

The Window to the World on Life of A Poet Questions:

Can you tell us about yourself?

I was a rock n roll radio deejay for many years, working inside and outside the continental United States. So I've always been in the "communication" business. Language was invented for the purpose of communication, and that's the way I feel about poetry--that it should communicate something understandable to someone, even if the reader has to work a little to understand it. I like it when readers come up with different interpretations of my poems.

Which country do you live in now? What’s your profession? be general, no need to specify your location...

I live in Arizona, USA. I still host some music shows on one of the local radio stations.

We’re happy that you have been part of Poets Rally as a participant, what has driven you to where you are in this particular community?
II was a part of this community a while back, and then I lost track of it, so I'm happy to see that it is back and going strong. It provides a place for poets to come together and share their work, and I think that's important.

How long have you been blogging? Do you think being part of a poetry community contributes to your creative writing?

I have had my blog, "Catnip" for about seven years now. Being part of a community such as this one provides an impetus for me to write, because I know that people will be reading it. I write, primarily, because it's just in there and it needs to come out, but it's nice to know that it will be read and appreciated (maybe) too!

Why poetry? Do you write fiction too?

Yes, I also write fiction and non-fiction. I have a memoir that has been published, entitled "Darwin's Moon" (A Memoir of Pain and Glory in Poetry and Prose). But poetry often says more with fewer words than some novels I've read, and that's why I like it.

Please share 3 to 5 blog links you enjoy reading most, give 1 or 2 sentences to tell why you love their creative process.

I'll give you three (though there are many more) of my favorites. The first is "cat" (she doesn't capitalize her name) and she blogs out of Canada. Her poems are often intensely personal, reflective, introspective. She isn't afraid to reveal pain, or joy. And it always comes from the heart. Find her at:  catsruledogsdroole.blogspot.com

Next is "Magyar" at Magyar Haiku. Haiku is one of my favorite forms, and he is a master of the form.  I am constantly amazed at how he can give me goosebumps in just three short lines!  He blogs from the New England area, USA, at: magyar-haiku.blogspot.com

And then we have Selma, of Selma In The City, an Australian writer of considerable talent, and that's an understatement. Her writing is poignant, haunting, and stays with you long after you read it. She has the uncanny ability (which can't be taught) to reach right in and grab you by the heart.     selmainthecity.com

How do you know when a poem is done? your own experiences need to be shared here...

I've heard some say that a poem is never done, you just stop tinkering with it at some point. In some sense, that may be true. For me, a poem is done when I feel satisfied with it, plain and simple. When I feel the essence of what I want to say has been communicated effectively.

How do you decide when a poem is "good"? Do you redo your own poems after they’re posted? it could be poem someone else written...

For I know a poem that someone else has written is good when it gives me goosebumps. When the hair on the back of my neck stands up!  I do occasionally make minor changes to a poem after it has been posted, because sometimes, like a kid, I'm anxious to get it out there before it is fully ready.

Do you think music and poetry are related? Why?

There is definitely a musicality to good poetry. The rhythm of it.  Rap music, for example, is essentially poetry set to a beat. And some of the best songs I've ever heard are pure poetry, like "Elusive Butterfly" by Bob Lind.

What issues are closed to your heart? Women’s rights, child abuses, etc.…name one
…

I'd have to say freedom of speech is number one with me. We saw recently in France how important it is to people worldwide. If free speech is curtailed, then poets have nowhere to go, because poetry is about speaking the truth.

What’s your other hobbies besides writing? Do you have pets? Give us a picture if you own a pet.

I live where the weather is warm, so I like to get out and hike and pursue other outdoor activities. I also love films, and I do a film review blog called "Timmy's Noodle Film Reviews." I have two cats, currently, though in the past I had several dogs as well. It does get chilly here sometimes at night,  and my cats are much friendlier in the winter time than in the summer. They are right there on top of me whenever I sit down. I'd like to think it's because I'm so lovable, but the truth is they are using me as a heating blanket!

Thanks in advance.

COOL BLUE EYES

Here in your world
of fantasy and fury
I wait in limbo
like a poem you've read
but won't allow to touch you
while you studiously
examine each word
for traces of toxicity
and hidden meaning
thoughts tumbling
round and round
in a spinning dream
gun sights rotating for
enemies imagined
while I bring only flowers
to place in the barrel
it's your mind
you are at war with
your anger
simmering
shimmering
behind cool blue eyes
mercurial
on an already sweltering day
firing randomly
at anything that moves
and I must duck and cover
waiting for the all clear to sound
to shoot you
my disarming smile

MATERIAL WITNESS

I saw you again
at the last red light
the girl on the billboard
flagging a ride
to catch a flight

But all wings
to the City Of Angels
were grounded by fog
so we taxied around
until we found
a cheap room

There were clean sheets
but no Bible

You kissed me awake
with your haunted eyes
ran your hands
down my worn Levis

We poured the wine
and talked about how it feels
to
be
frozen
in
time

You said: How is it effected
this transformation
from image to cell?
I said: I learned it once
in a madhouse
just a place we called hell
and you're a material witness

With the dawn
a woman's voice
singing an ancient tune

Your picture in the paper
an apparent suicide
from the east side
of the river

The girl on the billboard
at the last red light
the fog had lifted
at last she made her flight

(I think it's all here, but let me know if you need anything else. Photo attached. When will this be posted?  Thanks so much!)

the window to the world on life of a poet: meenakshi somasundaram

I am Meena.I am into business
Writing is my passion.
I started writing very late after my children grew up.

I am basically a post graduate in English literature and passed  with honours.
I got married at the age of 19 and from then on was into the family and business.
The urge to write was suppressed and when it could no longer be controlled it broke off one fine day that is on July 2008.
I found my canvas in wordpress.com and started with writing articles on business and topical issues.
One fine morning, I entered into the poetic world and I was caught by the fancy and there was no turning back.
I had written thousands of poems. They are  spontaneous and I do not restrain myself to one subject  but fly everywhere I seem to catch up.

2. I live in India and in Malaysia. Malaysia is my second home and I shuttle  between these two countries on and off, having been here for six months and there for  six months, not particularly specific about the months or the continuously too.
As stated before I am  into business.

3. I enjoy being in the community. I read the poems of other poets and feel mine is not so good as theirs. Most of the poems, I find are beautiful with imagery and rhymes flowing through. Certain poems are music to me. When I read them I feel happy and like to go on.The comments I get from the fellow poets  are really encouraging and they induce me to write more. Well, again I have to say, my poems are from the heart, and they reveal the subtle feelings  which escape many a writer. They reflect my culture and me at the most.

4. I have been blogging for the past  six and a half years. iThis platform or site, whatever you might call, is mine,  mine  alone where I see no trespassers, no intruders.where I revel and relax.

I post my poems the minute I complete them. I do not have the  patience  and I want to see them published at once. I then rush to the Stats page to find how many  of viewed it. I know it is extremely childish, but I cannot help it.
After a day or two, I go through them and correct the minor mistakes, mostly the punctuations where I am very weak.
The periods do elude me while I write and unmindful I post them. My writing being mainly poetry does enjoy the poetic justice and license.

Being part of the Poetry community, I feel I am close to the art and experience a relatively enthusiastic kinship among other poets. I do not communicate with them, but reading gives me a satisfaction and a  nearness  with my fellow poets.  I am not alone in this world penning poems there are others who do and who contribute better poems than me.

5. I write poetry and short articles Fiction, I have not tried.

^. The blogs I mostly read are
Chester maynes .wordpress.com
Poesy plus Polemics.

7. Music and poem are related so closely. Each one seamlessly merge into the other. The rhymes and the words along with the intonations go to make poetry a music. that enthralls the listener. I feel they are twins, inseparable twins.

8 The issue  that is close to my heart is poverty.  many a child goes without proper food in the underdeveloped countries. They have no shelter and sleep on pavements, be it rain or sun. Then comes the education. Many small children are denied the basics and forced to slog under unimaginable circumstances. The face of each of these children  with tears wrenches my heart and I am deeply pained.

9. Music is my best  companion. I forget myself when I hear the songs sung by my favorite musicians. In fact, I learnt music till I was nineteen, played on the Veena, a stringed instrument. My mother taught me veena. She was a remarkable instrumentalist. I also got trained in Bharatanatyam. I  had given recitals in my town during my  schooldays.   Poetry is akin to music and my early training in music and dance now helps in writing poetry. I do not have pets.

My blog link--- meenas17.com.

My best poems are all those I have written. I do not want to be partial to them. MY creativity has given birth to thousands of poems, each one is my best It is for you to choose.I leave it to your choice and discretion. If you  select one or two ,please make known to others and do not forget to share it with me.

the window to the world on life of a poet interview: Bob Hazelton

The Window to The World on Life of A Poet  Questions:

Can you tell us about yourself?

I'm a misguided misanthrope in the middle of life musing on the minutiae of mediocrity.

Which country do you live in now? What’s your profession? be general, no need to specify your location...

I live in America, NY state to be exact.
We’re happy that you have been part of Poets Rally as a participant, what has driven you to where you are in this particular community?

I was invited repeatedly and finally started posting to hopefully gain more exposure for my poems.

How long have you been blogging?

This is my ten year anniversary!

Do you think being part of a poetry community contributes to your creative writing?

Sometimes with prompts and of course support of fellow writers

Why poetry? Do you write fiction too?

Started with song lyrics and then started reading some classics and I was hooked. Sometimes I write little stories which are also posted on my site.

Please share 3 to 5 blog links you enjoy reading most, give 1 or 2 sentences to tell why you love their creative process.

I really haven't been reading any blogs lately but have many links on my blog to close friends and favorites.

How do you know when a poem is done? your own experiences need to be shared here...
It says what it needs to say.

How do you decide when a poem is "good"? Do you redo your own poems after they’re posted? it could be poem someone else written...

I have revisited and edited poems years after they were written, it's a tough call sometimes to change what originally poured out but we often learn more as we go along and can tweak something good into something great by changing only a few words.
Do you think music and poetry are related? Why?

if you like metered writing yes, if not, not so much. It makes me think of this quote: Poetry is painting with words, painting is poetry without words.
What issues are closed to your heart? Women’s rights, child abuses, etc.…name one…
My grandson and my own obscurity ;-)

I'm in a band and yes I have a chihuahua/jack Russell mix named Milo who I love more than anything.

the window to the world on life of a poet interview: marit rogne

Hi Maggie,

Sorry to be getting back to you so now. Hopefully it is not too late! Answers to The Window to the World on Life of a Poet are below.

Thanks!
Marit

The Window to The World on Life of A Poet  Questions:
Can you tell us about yourself?

I'm a twenty-something writer who loves reading, birds, polaroid photography, and resilience.
Which country do you live in now? What’s your profession? be general, no need to specify your location...

I live in the United States, and I teach Secondary Language Arts.

We’re happy that you have been part of Poets Rally as a participant, what has driven you to where you are in this particular community?

For me, being part of a poetry community is essential. I relish the opportunity to read other poet's work. I also appreciate the feedback and critique on my own work.
How long have you been blogging? Do you think being part of a poetry community contributes to your creative writing?

I've been blogging since 2008. Being part of a poetry community contributes to my creative writing because it provides me with camaraderie and a sense of solidarity. It's a great way to connect with other poets.

Why poetry? Do you write fiction too?

I started out writing strictly fiction. Actually, I used to hate poetry. I was lucky enough to have a teacher in High School who told me the problem was I hadn't been reading the right poems. He was right.
Please share 3 to 5 blog links you enjoy reading most, give 1 or 2 sentences to tell why you love their creative process.

http://www.waystationone.com -- I love his style. It reminds me a little of e.e. cummings, but he's made it his own.

http://stardreamingwithsherrybluesky.blogspot.ca -- It's awesome how she often provides a backstory to her poetry with either photos or prose. Also, she's an incredibly evocative writer.

http://susanspoetry.blogspot.com/2015/02/not-beyond-us.html -- Her imagery is amazing. I also love her line breaks!

http://www.kimnelsonwrites.com/ -- All of her poems really make me think. Also, it seems like nothing she writes is by accident. Super intelligent work.

How do you know when a poem is done? your own experiences need to be shared here...

I often come back to poems I wrote years ago to make changes. I've only written a handful or so of poems that I consider to be really, truly "done." I post poems when I feel like I've adequately expressed what I want to express in the moment, but that can change over time as I gain perspective. Constructive feedback can also make me rethink a poem I thought was done.
How do you decide when a poem is "good"? Do you redo your own poems after they’re posted? it could be poem someone else written...

I judge poems written by others to be good when they leave me somewhere different than where I began when I started reading the poem. This could be because it made me think, put me in a different place emotionally, or any number of reasons.
Do you think music and poetry are related? Why?

I think music and poetry are definitely related! Ezra Pound said it best: "Music begins to atrophy when it departs too far from the dance... poetry begins to atrophy when it gets too far from music."
What issues are closed to your heart? Women’s rights, child abuses, etc.…name one…

All human rights issues.
What’s your other hobbies besides writing? Do you have pets? Give us a picture if you own a pet.

I am learning to cook, and I coach middle school track. I have three lovely finches -- I've attached a photo of one of them, a society finch named Orestes.
