The Window To The World on Life of A Poet Week 18: Steven Federle

Can you tell us about yourself?

I am a teacher.  I teach English and Literature to kids in grades 6-8 at a Catholic K-8 in Vallejo, CA, as well as college composition and critical thinking (literature) at Solano College in Farifield, CA.  This means that I am constantly engaged by helping students of all ages to find their own, unique voices in written and verbal expression.

Which country do you live in now? What’s your profession? be general, no need to specify your

location...  I live in Suisun City, California (USA)... about 40 miles north-east of San Francisco

We’re happy that you have been part of Poets Rally as a participant, what has driven you to where you are in this particular community?

Because this site is filled with people who just love to read and write poetry... who could ask for anything more?

How long have you been blogging? Do you think being part of a poetry community contributes to your creative writing?

I've been blogging since 2010 or so.. Yes, communities like this are important because writing is not solitary... it is communication and requires a reader.  Furthermore, reading poetry inspires and informs the writing process... it establishes a context for writing.

Why poetry? Do you write fiction too?

No fiction... why poetry? I think Wordsworth once describe poetry as "narrow rooms."  I think poetry, at its best, distills experience and thought into a pure, essential form.  A powerful, concise image can say more (in my opinion) than 20 well written pages of prose.

How do you know when a poem is done? your own experiences need to be shared here...

I'm not sure a poem is ever really done... I've picked up poems after 10 years and begun revising.  I guess the best answer is that it is done when I like what I read.

How do you decide when a poem is "good"? Do you redo your own poems
after they’re posted? it could be poem someone else written...

I revise it constantly.. it usually starts out with three or four times the final word count.. I believe in concise writing (though you wouldn't know it by this rambling "interview").

Do you think music and poetry are related? Why?

yes, they are... both work with rhythm, for example...poetry is word-music

What issues are closed to your heart? Women’s rights, child abuses, etc.…name one…

I am very concerned with the continued existence of poverty.. worldwide, but especially in my own country and community. I'll get a little political here... but my reading of the Gospels and great literature and poetry all tell me that the wealthy have a responsibility to the poor, and that they disregard it at their peril. both in this world and the next.

What’s your other hobbies besides writing? Do you have pets? Give us a picture if you own a pet.

I have an old cat named Daisy... other hobbies.. working in my garden, reading, ... my family... but mostly writing.

Please list your blog links below, share 1 or 2 poems that represents best of your poetry talent…

Poem #1:

Matins

Times of transition
appeal to my sense of
transcendence.

In joyful morning
eastern gold flows
over our highest leaves.

The blue-jays shriek
as our cat prowls
the wet grass.

She does not care

that this is the edge of time.

But I can feel the sun’s fire
as I work in the yard

and hear the mockingbird
in our highest eves
calling to his love
in the cherry tree!

Soon the wind
again will rise
and another summer day
will coldly decline

as the western fires
wilt
to bluest steel, to
blackest silk.

Poem #2

http://stevenfederle.blogspot.com/2010/09/prayer.html

prayer

deep in my center
lies the
word.

it resonates
softly, it
whispers
in my ear.

its lover,
silence,
embraces
the word
like thick mist
caressing
golden
coastal slopes.

but this crude song is
a metaphor,
an anxious gong,
a poor imitation,
a mockingbird.

patiently,
the word
resists
all explanation.

it just simply
is.
